What Are You Doing This Summer?

The Summer Blood Drive is essential for serving the needs of the Delmarva community to ensure there is enough blood on hand when its needed in times of crisis or serious illness. Considering It takes more than 70,000 people each year to meet the needs of patients at 19 hospitals in our region, this year’s summer blood drive is more important than ever, and we need your help.

Make giving blood a part of your summer plans because the need for blood never takes a summer break and when someone needs blood, it’s no vacation.

How Your Blood Makes A Difference

Whole Blood Donation Donating whole blood is quick and easy. The entire appointment takes about an hour. When you arrive, we take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse. The donation takes 10 minutes or less and we provide post-donation refreshments before you leave. It is very safe and sterile process – and will never expose you to any kind of infectious disease.

Platelets Donation Platelets are a part of blood critically needed to treat diseases like leukemia or cancer. They are collected during a safe and sterile process called phoresis, which means “to separate.” During the donation, your blood passes through a machine that collects the platelets and returns other components back to your body. The entire process takes about 90 minutes, and you can donate platelets once every two weeks.

Double Red Cell Donation Red blood cells are needed by almost every type of patient requiring transfusion. The process for double red cell donation is similar to a whole blood donation, except a special machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning your plasma and platelets back to you. The entire process takes about 40 minutes, and you can donate double red cells once every four months.
